The hotel is beautiful, very comfortable, pretty, well maintained and inviting. It is in a fabulous location for exploring the stunning city of Bordeaux. It is right beside the Opera and within walking distance of most of the sites. My room was beautiful, overlooking a pretty Bordeaux street. My reason for the 3* rating is due to my experiences interacting with the staff. I found them very rude to me except for a night porter and one of the ladies who cleans the rooms who were both polite. Although my French is not perfect, I'm probably at B3-C1 standard at the moment and am still studying the language. The staff made me feel like I was speaking a language that was dead and gone instead of their own language. When I arrived at reception and greeted the receptionist in French, she pretended she didn't understand me me and she switched to English immediately. I continued to speak in French and despite her continuing to address me in English, and I her in French, she eventually gave in and at the end of my registration, began to address me in French. It is extremely rude, when someone is speaking to you in your native tongue, to try to force them to speak English to you, all the while, pretending to not understand the guest's French. Next morning, I greeted the lady in the breakfast room by saying "Bonjour, comment-allez vous?" and she laughed hysterically in my face and then addressed me in English. Once again, it was a battle of wills between her speaking English to me and I responding in French to her. She made me a cup of coffee, left it in the cup to sit for quite a while until she gave it to me, by which time it was cold. I felt I had been punished for speaking her own language to her. I asked her about laughing at me the next morning. Without an apology she replied in French "good day!" and walked off. Breakfast is not worth the money and hot food is cold. I would advise going room only and visit one of the many cafes around the city for a better breakfast.
