Blissful perfection
From start to finish, they do it right. They spare no expense. Welcomed with a sit-down in the lobby area with a drink and snack, no credit card details, all handled seated, and the receptionist simply would not let herself be moved into covering such tawdry details as credit cards...I love the style. This is a small detail that was handled very well to give us a welcoming arrival and a feeling of home vs. a hotel. It's a very Millennial friendly style, or anyone with high expectations for the quality of their precious leisure time, frankly.
We were upgraded to a Deluxe room (booked Superior) without asking, which is a lovely touch. Room had a large bathroom, and a separate walk-in closet, such a crazy luxury for Rome.
Minibar items - everything in the room from drinks, wine, snacks, -- is all included and complimentary, and refilled in both the morning and turndown services, so you can never run out of treats. It's so thoughtful of the hotel to decide this, a small expense for them, which is more than adequately compensated to them by the room rates, but which the guests will remember and enjoy to an inordinate degree, I think.
The room is stylish and well decorated, cozy, everything is highest quality possible. You will feel ensconced in luxury. Housekeeping did full service twice a day, spotlessly and without error - phone cards recoiled every time, hairdryer always back in its place with coiled cord, they get everything right, and they do it every time.
Breakfast is good & included. The service is superb for breakfast. We never wanted for anything to be refilled or offered something else. The selection on "buffet" is quite small, but that's due to hotel being small...it could be really wasteful if they put out a big spread. The small buffet is more than compensated by hot menu items on offer, also included, as well as a basket of pastries that will be brought to your table (and could get seconds, I suppose). They do a great American coffee delivered in its own pot as seems to be customary at fine Italian hotels, we sometimes had to get two pots each (shameful American coffee hogs...hehe). Love the lack of a check for breakfast, too.
Tip - if you are a lighter sleeper, ask not to face the street. We faced the street (Room 9) and mostly it was fine, could hear occasional cars go by, or if a few folks sat outside at the restaurant across the tiny street, we could hear their laughter if they were loud. Given that it was a free and unrequested room upgrade though, I wasn't interested to request any room changes.
I do want to give tiny recommendations for improvement - would love to see:
- more diet/non-sugar soft drinks in the minibar
- consider providing a bar of soap for the shower (Americans like bar soaps vs. bath gel for showers)...we just brought the bar soap from counter into our shower
- since the hotel provides all toiletries except the hand bar soap in large unremovable dispensers, there's no chance to take home a few shampoo etc. to enjoy the scent of the hotel later at home. This is a missed opportunity. Folks like to take a couple of toiletries to remember the hotel later... My suggestion is for the hotel to leave a set of small bottles of the same toiletries, in a small satchel, in each room on the last night's turndown service - that way, the guest can take it home to enjoy. It's also a reminder to book the hotel again! Also, the finest hotels I've stayed in do not provide the bulk unremovable toiletries, and it could come across as a little bit "institutional" - what JK provides are high-quality products made in Italy but just in large bottles, which I assume reduces waste. But again, providing the small bottles as a take home gift on the last night would be an ideal way to have your cake and eat it too.
The hotel is light on facilities, as you'd expect, as it's so small. Don't miss the library off the restaurant - I always wanted to look around in there, and I always forgot to do it. The restaurant is wonderful. The rooms are impressive and comfortable. Lobby is inviting. Staff very accommodating. I really had to think hard for any areas for improvement. It seems to me this is the absolute top of Rome accommodations and I would love to stay here again...look no further!
