Fantastic for the eye, miserable service level
Hello,
We are staying in the Grand Hotel Oslo from 24. February untill 26. Febrauary 2019.
I will write my review in five categories: Optic, Room, Service, Food, Concierge. Rating will be from 1 (awful) to 10 (perfect)
1. Optic: A wonderful Hotel, very nice art, decoration, seating - everything perfect!
Rating: 10
2. Room: very nice style, everyghing perfectly clean. The doorstep to the bathroom gave us some pain, in the dark you stumble over it if you are not used to it. Also when we arrived, we thought that we were upgradef, because tjere was a second room ooen for us (childrens room with extra bed and TV.) When we came back from a walk, that room was closed, so that happy feeling turned to disappointment.
Rating: 9 minus 2 for the disappointment = 7
3. Service: I really can't imagine how the service level can be so poor in a 5 star hotel.. On arrival there was no concierge at all and the reception didn't know anything about the city. The service at the Othilia bar was very slow. In general everything is very slow and the employees seem to have no motivation to work. I had a very good cocktail - Red Snapper - at first from a nice lady but then the service changed and the same cocktail from a manbunned man tasted awful. In the restaurant the waitresses hardly spoke English - how can that be in a city like Oslo?? Also they had no idea what the daily fish and meat was and had no idea about wine. A sommelier was not around. In Munich, where I come from, this kind of service level is absolutely unimaginable.
Rating: 2
Food: Absolutely delicious. Everything that we tasted was very high class!!
Rating: 10
Concierge: Not existing on arrival. Next day there was one, but Google was a better help then him.
Rating: 1

Very central hotel in the heart of town
Stayed here for 4 nights in Jan/Feb. Snow on the ground and a bitter wind but nice and warm inside. We had asked for a quiet room with a bath - and were shown to a room down several flights of stairs with a shower. They promptly upgraded us to a larger room with a bath without any problem.
The hotel has been well renovated and the rooms are most comfortable.
It advertises a swimming pool and sauna - but when I arrived it was 'full' and they could not let me in. Even if I had it would have cost £30 at the weekend.
Restaurant is a bit chilly (glass roof over what used to be the Courtyard) with some interesting/disturbing murals recently pained. (The waitress thought they were disgusting). Food good - but expensive (as it is everywhere in Oslo). House wine £47 a bottle and not worth it. Good breakfast in cafe next door.
The main benefit of this hotel is that it is central and you can walk to most places.

Fantastic hotel
Hei
Had birthday weekend gift from my daughter , on this hotel.
This was great experience and everything was topp.
Staff was friendly and always smiling.
And we were interested in the history of the hotel and they knew the history , and printed out for us all extra info about the hotel.
Only negative was that the swimming pool area is included in room price , except on weekends, and we couldn't not see that in room information, but but we found that out when we talked to the lobby staff.
We will come back, best weekend ever.
Recommend spa and massage, it was great and worth every krone.
Best regards
Stefan Ragnar

A bit disappointed
Let me clarify. It’s a 5* hotel, rooms great, staff helpful as you’d expect. Great location too.
But here’s why we were disappointed. Checked in lunchtime Friday and was advised the spa was only free to guests until 16:00, after that you have to pay NOK300. Ok, not the end of the world, thought we’d go on Saturday instead.
But then we learned that there is no free admission on Saturdays for hotel guests and the charge is NOK 300.
One of the reasons we chose the Grand was because of the spa, so feel a bit cheated by what we were told at check-in and what they advertise...
And, if you do want to use the spa, you’ll need to book it in advance...
If it wasn’t for the Spa issues, would have given it 5*

Tast of luxury !
We went for an upgrade, when checking inn.
That meant a bigger room, and also on the 7 floor, with a balcony.
(note:the balconies are only on this floor) Giiving us a view of the city halls towers.

We had fordrink at the top bar "eight" with stunnings view over the main street Karl Johan. This is the place for your drink.

Welcoming staff, lovely room, all in all: i'll be back :)

Disappointing
Stayed for two nights before Christmas. Great location right in the city centre and opposite the main Christmas Market in Oslo.
Good service on check in. Room was nice.
We were advised there was an event in the hotel that night. We had no issue with this as we were aware the hotel had a ballroom when we booked. You never hear anything from parties or events in these very large hotels.
After a quick dinner we went to our room at 10pm and became apparent that the sound proofing in the hotel was non existent. The sound of the DJ reverberated around the whole floor of the hotel we were on.
We assumed the event would finish at midnight, but that time came and went and the noise actually got louder. We complained to reception and after twice telling us there were no other rooms they eventually moved us to another room in a different part of the hotel.
The new room was fine. Very close to the street so you could hear people outside but that was fine as we couldn’t hear the music.
I have stayed in many hotels that put on events and have ball rooms etc. This hotel doesn’t seem set up for it as the whole hotel was noisy. Not sure if there is a sound proofing issue or if it is just really bad design.
We didn’t have breakfast at the hotel. The spa was good and the small pool area was very relaxing. Well worth booking a slot here.
We ate in the connected restaurant on the second night and were impressed with the service and food. Review done separately.
I’d probably avoid staying here if there is an event on

Birthday trip.
We where at the grand Hotel for a birthday celebration for a friend. Stayed there one night for one night in December.

(I should say in Dec one should book in advance since its the holidays)

But the service was great and the place was beautiful. Our room was big and really nice.

Breakfast was the best part. They had so much variation and everything super fresh.

I recommend this Hotel if you want to live quite central in Oslo City. It is not super cheap for a night, but worth your whole & stay since the most places are nearby.
Loved it.

Geat Room, Great Location
We stayed here in December because we wanted to hit the Christmas Market which is right in front of the hotel. We stayed two nights and really enjoyed this high end hotel. The rooms were well appointed and the bed was extremely comfortable (if you like soft mattresses). If you need a firm mattress you may want to request that when you reserve. We did not eat or drink at this place because we had selected other locations to dine. The restaurant in the hotel looked very nice, so I recommend you try it. The hotel staff, in particular, Martine were extremely helpful in making reservations. I would definitely stay here again. (Side note; the Oslo Taxi Drivers here will charge you double the fair if they know you are American. Use Uber. You wont save much money but you wont be ripped off. If you don't have Uber, goon line to estimate you cab fare using one of the on-line calculators for Oslo Cabs, and then check with the driver before you go. To give you an idea, the cab driver charged us over $200 for the ride from the airport (a 50 minute drive). the fare should have been around $100. I used my credit car to pay, so I will get my money back no problem.

Grand hotel is a classic luxury hotel, situated in the center of Oslo, in walking distance to the palace, shopping and many restaurants. It surely is a hotel on the expensive side, and I wonder if it’s worth it. I’d say the average price of a nice, but not great room is the double of other hotels in the area. The lobby, bar, restaurant, spa (with pool) and fitness facilities are superior. The ambience is one of discrete luxury and the crowd is affluent. This is we’re the winners of the Nobel peace price live every year and the hotel has hosted many celebrities and heads of state.

But.. the breakfast was not up to par. Cold eggs and pretty basic.

If you pay for your own pocket and you’re not wealthy, I’d say visit the hotel, eat, drink and visit the spa… order a massage and access to the pool,, but maybe consider staying somewhere else. If money’s no problem. Go for it.

I love this hotel. Maybe not so much as a hotel guest as I live in Oslo, but every May 17th (Norway's constitutional day) for the last 57 years we have had the pleasure of having s room with a view of Karl Johan watching the children's parade. This year was magical. 60.000 kids and 130 schools participated. Well worth a visit if you are in town on that day.

Third time staying here and always amazing! Service is fantastic, rooms are wonderful, clean, excellent location, and the breakfast every morning is phenomenal. No weaknesses from my view and always top-notch. THE place to stay in Oslo!

Beautiful place and comfy room but 40 minute wait for breakfast, rude Spa staff which you can't use and a rooftop bar which is not available to guests because it's open to public and fully booked all the time. 5 star hotel with 1 star service for its actual guests. Poor value for money.

Reception service came across as polite but artificial. Several contradictions and policies which varied depending on whom you spoke with, so thankfully the beds and toiletries provided excellent respite from the ordeal.
The breakfast was standard and uninspired; there are better spreads from other hotels in Oslo.
Excellent location and amenities otherwise marred by a lack of sophistication on the hospitality front.
