A very special experience of a lifetime-Historical but not old
Overall, an amazing experience and I highly recommend staying here. We received phenomenal SPG Platinum Premier recognition. The hotel had so much history yet has been updated over the years to ensure there are very modern amenities while keeping the historical ambience of the hotel.
Booking: As an SPG/Marriott Platinum Premier member, we used the SPG application to book. We checked several times a day for availability on New Year’s Eve as it is a very popular hotel. We finally were able to book as availability came up.
As our stay approached, I submitted a SPG suite certificate and I contacted the hotel via the chat function on the SPG mobile application. They were very responsive and were working diligently on trying to get me a suite upgrade. They kept me informed each day which is very nice. Their responses were prompt and very courteous.
Check in: Our experience at check-in was very warm. To begin with, the door man was very kind and help us through the door with our luggage. The foyer/lobby was extravagant. I also loved the hallway with all the displays about the hotel’s history.
The gentleman who helped us at the front desk was a “trainee”. However, he was very confident and polite. He immediately addressed us as SPG Platinum Premier members. He apologized for not being able to fulfill our suite upgrade due to the New Year’s Eve holiday. We even received a little compensation as a result. We appreciated their efforts and the gift. We completely understood how booked they were on New Year’s Eve. The gentleman took our luggage upstairs and showed us our room. He was very pleasant and energetic.
Room: The room was historical yet modern. It had wonderful art, furniture, and fixtures. However, it had many outlets, modern televisions, modern phones, and an up to date bathroom. The bed and pillows were some of the most comfortable I have ever slept on. The fabric on the chairs was very clean and the room was very fresh. The bathroom had two sinks which was nice for getting ready. The shower had good water flow/temperature while the toiletries were fancy as well.
Special Touches: Shortly after our arrival, we received a delivery of fruit and champagne. The champagne was Laurent Perrier, which was an excellent champagne. We loved it as we recently made a trip to Reims, France and have been critical of every champagne we come across. Laurent Perrier is also one of Brian Kelley’s (“The Points Guy”) favorites as he posts about it on blogs and social media very often. Later on, we received a Luxury Collection-Hotel Imperial champagne bottle stopper which was great for the bottle and some chocolate for turn down service.
Breakfast: As SPG Platinum Premier members, we chose the “Champagne Breakfast” which was in Cafe Imperial. The food selection was relatively small but still good. The omelette and lox salmon hit the spot. The Laurent Perrier was the highlight.
Cafe Imperial: The cafe was very nice and had a warm ambience. We went there for afternoon tea as well as New Year’s Eve dinner. We were very relieved to get a table there early in the evening as we tried many other places. I called down from the hotel room and a table was held for us. The food was delicious. The service during New Year’s Eve dinner was a bit slow due to us being next to a couple larger parties. However, it was still good food. The desserts were outstanding.
Check out: Instead of using mobile check out, I decided to see the front desk. The receptionist was very kind and apologetic for not being able to upgrade us to a suite, which we absolutely understood was due to the NYE rush. I also asked her who was in the lobby while we were eating breakfast. She explained that the Austrian and Finnish presidents made an appearance which is a testament to the significance and status of the hotel.
Overall, it was a historical stay that I am very glad I chose for New Year’s Eve. I hope to return again and maybe arrive on a slower day so I can get one of the nice suites. I look forward to returning. I highly recommend this hotel for Vienna.
